Van Zelf creates an eclectic blend of indie Americana, alt-country and pop, performed in both the Dutch dialect ‘Limburgs’ and English. “One song simply feels right in my mother tongue; another works better in English. I don’t want to limit myself to one language or genre,” frontman Ruud Versteden told De Limburger. Van Zelf began in 2020, when Versteden (Thorn, 1987) used the space created by the pandemic to record a collection of deeply personal songs. What started as a solo project evolved—after a live EP, several singles and a series of shows—into a collaboration with guitarist Martijn Geuijen, also his bandmate in DJINNS and The Waiting. In this line-up, Van Zelf released its self-titled debut album in 2024, featuring the standout single Mam. Following a series of successful shows, the band felt the need for a fuller sound. “I wanted to place the intimate and vulnerable within a larger, more versatile collective,” Versteden told Dutch regional broadcaster L1. With Bram Korsten on bass and Bart van Lier on drums, Van Zelf found its definitive four-piece line-up. On 18 September 2026, the band releases its second album, Late Bloomer. Entirely in English and partly recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, the album marks a new chapter. The accompanying Vals Plat Tour kicks off on 19 September 2026 at Poppodium SJOR in Roggel, before travelling through both Dutch and Belgian Limburg, with shows in venues including Venlo, Maaseik (BE) and Weert.
